Klezmer

Originating in Southeastern Europe, Klezmer is the traditional secular music of the Ashkenazi Jews.  The song titles, terminology, and lyrics (if there are any) are usually in Yiddish, and it historically mainly functioned as music for dances and celebrations.  Stylistically, klezmer is characterized by expressive melodies that are reminiscent of the human voice, weeping, laughing, etc.  The clarinet, violin, cymbalom, accordion, and trombone are commonly found in klezmer ensembles.
